Load Research & Analytics

Load shapes, forecasting, and the methods behind rate and planning decisions, plus the Load Research Manual.

Areas of focus

What this committee does.

This is where utility load research, forecasting, and data analytics professionals advance the methods behind rate design, system planning, and resource decisions. Members maintain the Load Research & Analytics Manual and share the data practices and benchmarks the industry relies on.

How it works

Cadence and what's next.

How it meets

Meets in person twice a year, spring and fall, plus monthly virtual sessions.

What's next

Fundamentals Course at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, New Orleans — October 2026.

Professional development

Courses for every stage of a load research career.

Structured training from foundational concepts to advanced analytical methods. The Fundamentals Course runs every year; the Statistical Methods and Advanced Applications courses each run every other year.

Foundational

Fundamentals Course

Offered annually
Who should attend

Executive directors, directors, managers, supervisors, and specialists entering or supporting load research.

Topics covered
  • Introduction to load research in the electric utility industry
  • How the grid is measured and monitored
  • LR data and customer cost allocation across rate classes
  • Industry standards from the AEIC Load Research Manual
  • Application of LR data in utility planning and rate design
Intermediate

Statistical Methods Course

Offered every other year
Who should attend

Analysts, planners, rate design analysts, load research analysts, and cost-of-service analysts working with load data, modeling, and sampling.

Prerequisites

AEIC Fundamentals Course, a strong statistical background, or several years of load research experience. Familiarity with SAS, R, or Stata is helpful.

Topics covered
  • Statistical theory underpinning sample design and expansion
  • Hypothesis testing and regression analysis
  • Application to common industry load research problems
  • Group exercises and participation between sessions
Advanced

Advanced Applications Course

Offered every other year
Who should attend

Load research, load analysis, forecasting, pricing design, and cost-of-service analysts — typically 3+ years of experience, though not a strict requirement.

Prerequisites

Strong command of statistics and rate design concepts. Advanced analytical skills required.

Topics covered
  • Sampling: MPU vs. ratio estimation, error ratios, and confidence intervals
  • Experimental design and application
  • Electrification trends: heat pumps, EVs, solar, and batteries
  • Forecasting challenges: data centers, EV identification, V2G
  • AMI analytics: EV detection, customer clustering, demand response evaluation
